Redacting / Whiteout Fields
In certain customer environments, privacy regulations or business requirements prohibit storing original, unredacted document versions. Specific sensitive information — such as names, stamps, or broker details — must be hidden before the document is passed further downstream. The Whiteout Fields feature enables automatic or user-controlled redaction of defined areas in a document. During output generation, these regions are visually removed (by overlaying a white area).
Configuration
- Configure Document Type Relations
-
- Open the relevant Document Type.
- In the desired Relation, disable the “use standard” option.
- Activate the “Whiteout” flag on the Relation.
⚠️ The whiteout setting is stored on the Relation level, not on individual fields.
It must be configured separately for each Document Type.

- Assign User Rights
- Grant the “Whiteout fields” permission to users who should be able to manually override whiteout behavior during validation.

Usage
During Extraction Validation (EV)
When reviewing a document in Extraction Validation:
- Each field indicates whether it will be redacted in the final output.

- Users with the “Whiteout fields” permission can override this behavior.
Two new icons have been added to the EV interface:
Open eye → The field will not be redacted.
Crossed-out eye → The field will be redacted.
Overrides can be applied:
- Per field [in the field information, see screenshot above]
- Per section

- Per row (in tables or repeatable fieldsets)

- Per column (in tables or repeatable fieldsets) via contex menu

Users without the “Whiteout fields” permission cannot modify the redaction behavior; the system applies the default settings from the Document Type configuration.
During Output File Generation
When an output file is generated (assuming the relevant upload profile option is active):
- All fields or regions marked as Whiteout are covered by a white overlay.
- The white overlay completely hides the content (text, logo, or image) in that area.
- The resulting file is typically a PDF composed of redacted JPEG pages.

Current implementation details:
- Only white overlays are supported.
- Downstream processes and APIs can still access the unredacted field values, but the visible output file is sanitized.
